My Music Culture

Hello! I am Karsyn and I am a freshman here at Converse. I don’t have much music experience, but I was captain on the drill team/ dance team in my high school’s band. I love listening to mostly any types of music. I think it can very relaxing or very uplifting to listen to music during my day-to-day life.

I had lived all of my life in the south- western Pennsylvania, but I am excited for the new experience of living in the south. Before Converse, I was on a competitive gymnastics team for almost ten years, which led to my decision to be on the acrobatics and tumbling team here at Converse. Here at Converse, I plan to be either a Biochemistry or Chemistry major.

My go to style of music currently is R&B/soul. I like the somewhat calming aspects of the music and I feel as if I could always chill out to or jam to it. When I listen to music, I tend to find a song that I like, and then let the music app play similar songs to it. A song I have been listening to a lot is Mystery Lady by Masego and Don Toliver. When I first listened to this song, I really enjoyed the sound of the song. Personally, I feel like his voice almost sounds like it is bouncing up and down in the main chorus and I am very intrigued by it.

As I grew up, my family used to always play music around the house while doing chores. One specific song I remember always listening to is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I was always so intrigued by the different sounds that occur in the song, and how it seemed so many different "genres" could be included in one song. Now that I am older, I love to listen to that song and it reminds my of when I would listen to it with my family.

Growing up I listened to country with my family but I could never understand it enough to want to listen to it. After listening to in the beginning of my childhood I never had the desire to listen to it. There is only one country song that I actually enjoy and will put on willingly. Although I don’t like country music, I really enjoy the song Tennessee Whisky by Chris Stapleton. A song that I cannot stand to listen to anymore is Happy by Pharrell Williams. I listened to it so much when it was popular that I cannot stand to listen to it now.

  1. A lot of songs like Happy by Pharrell Williams are over played and heard on the radio, overtime leading to I'll call it musical fatigue. I also had a similar reason for my personally connecting music. It adds such an extra layer to music when you have familar connections to it.

  2. Hi Karsyn ! I'm also a fan of R&B music, I really like feel and sound of just that genre. I'm a fan of Don Toliver as well, I really liked his "Heaven or Hell" that came out last year. In general I just really like his voice because it smooth, and sorta relaxing in a way. But I really enjoyed your blog !

  3. Hi Karsyn, I really like your choice of music!! Bohemian Rhapsody is a meaningful song to me as well. My mom loved Queen and we would always listen to them while riding in the car and just anytime it came on the radio. Every time I listen to it now it just reminds me of the good time we've had.

  4. Hey Karsyn. I love how Bohemian Rhapsody seems like so many genres in one too. I've also found it's super fun to blast it from your car with all the windows rolled down. Coutry music is also a no for me, I just could never get in to it, even though I've listened to it with family.

  5. Hey Karsyn, I haven’t listened to Don Toliver or Masego however, I really enjoyed the song “Mystery Lady” I find it to be catchy and unique. I also enjoyed the visuals of this music video, and I will definitely add this song to my Spotify. Secondly, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen has been a song that I have always enjoyed. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was one of the first song I heard by Queen, and really helped shape my diverse music taste in my early teenage years. I enjoy the unique aspects of this song and was really excited to see that you included this song in your blog. Lastly, I agree with your opinion on the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, I believe this song was fun to listen to at first. However, after hearing it on the radio and other media sources constantly, the song became less enjoyable overtime.

  6. I love your music taste Don Toliver, and Queen. I am so glad to hear that I am not the only person who doesn't understand country music, I mean I can see how people themselves are able to like it but it is really just not for me. Glad to see that you also included Happy. When I was in 5th grade it was my jam, but now I find it so annoying.
