My dad's Music Culture
For my musical interview, I decided to talk to my dad about he grew up with music. He grew up near the same town I did, so I was wondering how the culture if where we grew up and his parents had an affect on what he listed to.
Me: Hey dad, I have a few questions for you about the music
you listened to when you were growing up, and how it shaped what you listen to
now.
Dad: Alright go for it.
Me: Okay, first I was wondering what types of music you
listened to when you were growing up?
Dad: Honestly, I listened to almost every type of music, but
we mostly listened to classic rock.
Me: why did you listen to classic rock? Was it someone in
the family?
Dad: Usually my dad chose to listen to it on the radio, so I
just grew up with it being played all of the time when we were at home or in
the car.
Me: So, what music do you typically like to listen to now?
And what caused your music taste to change over time?
Dad: Right now, I’ve been listening to mostly music from the
‘90s and country music from the 2000s. Although they are very different, there
is something that I can find enjoyable in both of them right now. I think the
music I have listened to has changed because I listen to so much music that I needed
some change after a while. At work we listen to music all day so the same genre
can get overplayed after listening to it at work and when I have free time. I
like to try and change it up every few months, so nothing ever gets too tiring.
Me: What music do you not like to listen to, or would you
ask to change if you heard it come on?
Dad: That’s a very hard question because I like most music
and could listen to almost anything without having problem. If I had to pick
one though, I would have to say classical music. It is just not my type.
Me: How do you feel about the current popular music, that
plays on the radio.
Dad: I think the music on the radio today has a very
different sound to it. It does not have the same beat as what music back in the
day has. There is a different experience in listening to music now then there
was before. I still enjoy to listen to it though.
Me: Okay one last question, what experience do you have? Did
you play any instrument growing up?
Dad: Another hard question, I don’t have a ton of experience
but in elementary school and middle school I played the saxophone. I have not
touched any type of instrument since then.
Me: Well, thank you for answering my questions today, I enjoyed
learning some more about the music culture in your few.
My dad is a hardcore classic rock fan, so I also grew up listening to that. And it's super cool that your dad played the saxophone! (Even if it was in middle school). I never learned how to play an instrument, but I've always wanted to. My dad actually played the trumpet in high school!
ReplyDeleteI relate to your dad in regards to quitting any musical pursuits. I played the violin in middle school and let's just say if anyone wants a violin I have one! My parents are also into rock, and out of the two of them my dad is the bigger fan of the 90s. I really like that you could compare yourself to your dad based on where you live!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of similarities from the blogs I have read with parents listening to rock while growing up. It is interesting to see the dominate music type change overtime, right now it being pop culture music. It was also interesting that you're Dad enjoys changing his go to music genre every know and then because that is something I would never be able to do.
